Mechanical/Materials Engineer | Otis Elevator Company | Farmington, CT

This position is for a materials or mechanical engineer with a
background in the application of non-metallic materials.
Belts are a key component in our Gen2 line of elevators, with the belt
jacket being a critical part of the belt. The selected candidate will be
responsible for the belt jacket material development on several belt
development programs, with additional responsibilities of supporting our
current products.
Responsibilities for the first assignments include:
Belt Jacket
- Lead the final jacket material selection for a new belt development.
- Generate test plans, carry out tests, and evaluate the test results
for the belt jacket.
- Generate a correlation between material properties and belt
performance.
- Stay up to date with industrial advances in materials which have a
potential for use as a belt jacket.
The work may require 1 or 2 international trips per year, in order to
visit suppliers or customers.
Upon completion of the projects shown above, the engineer should be able
to support and eventually lead developments of CSB or other mechanical
elevator components, especially those involving non-metallic materials.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
BS degree in Materials or Mechanical Engineering is
required. MS degree is desirable. A dual degree in both mechanical and
materials engineering is also desirable.
Ideal candidate will have:
- 2 to 6 years of experience with a BS degree, or 0 to 6 years of
experience with a MS degree.
- Education and experience with mechanical applications of non-metallic
materials.
- Experience with Mechanical/materials testing and writing test
reports.
- Ability to use test results and analyses to improve designs.
- Innovation skills aimed at design or materials improvements.
- Understanding of manufacturing methods.
- Ability to interface with internal Otis customers and suppliers.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Understanding of the Otis Product Development Process, and ability to
follow this process.
The frictional interface between the belt and machine sheave is
critical. Course work or experience with tribology will be very useful.
Approximate business travel estimated at 1 or 2 international trips per
year.
